Hardscape vs Landscape

When it comes to hardscape versus landscaping outdoor projects, do you know the difference?  The outdoor area of any property is able to be divided into two specific categories, hardscapes and landscapes.  There are many people who use these terms interchangeably because they don’t understand the difference, but it is not hard to understand. The hardscape of your property usually includes any hard surfaces, such as the driveway, walkway, patio, or pavers.  The landscape of your property is any softer surfaces, such as lawns, garden beds, and so on.

Hardscape Projects

Both hardscaping and landscaping are able to improve the appearance of your property, but only hardscaping helps you improve accessibility when it comes to getting from one area to another without getting muddy or ruining beautiful flowers.

Hardscapes should prioritize accessibility and practicality, as well as the durability of your property.  Any place you’re interested in setting up furniture, driving your vehicle on, or lounging should include hardscaping.  Hardscaping also includes retaining walls that can prevent soil erosion and so much more.

Hardscaping should not only be practical, but it should also be beautiful.  Hardscaping can also increase the value of your property and make certain areas more accessible.  The benefit of hardscapes is that they’re usually more durable than landscaping.  When hardscaping, you’ll want to consider the following:

  • Repairing or replacing a driveway with asphalt, concrete, or rock.
  • Maintaining the concrete steps that lead to your door or porch
  • Creating or adding concrete or paver pathways to your yard or outdoor lounge areas
  • Expanding your patio with pavers or poured concrete

Landscaping Projects

Landscaping includes all of the natural elements in your property, yard, and lawn.  This includes any mulch beds, plants, flowers and shrubbery.  These areas can provide a natural habitat for honey bees and other good critters that you may be interested in protecting.

Landscaping may provide a beautiful habitat for you to enjoy your life in, but it also serves a more practical purpose, ensuring that your property has the foliage it needs to drain and absorb rain, and stay beautiful year after year.
Landscaping projects might include:

  • Keeping your lawn mowed, and filing in bare patches of grass with seed or sod
  • Planting new trees or bushes on your property for privacy and noise control
  • Planting flowers that enhance beauty
  • Creating a safe space for pollen spreaders like honey bees to thrive
  • Adding fresh mulch to garden beds for better nutrition and drainage
